Homecoming /2010/homecoming /2010/homecoming#comments Tue, 28 Sep 2010 20:02:25 +0000 brother /?p=1585

Homecoming has just finished. We’d like to thank all the alumni who came down, and send our greetings to those who couldn’t make it. We were graced with the presence of several alumni from near the beginning of our chapter’s history, including the first female brother, Marilyn Hamilton, along with several more recent alumni from the local community and from much further away.

This year’s Homecoming featured the traditional Bullock’s dinner on Friday, followed by a light dessert social.  We made a trip to House AA, whose current occupants were kind enough to let us take a look around. Saturday featured a CDAA Meeting, followed by a Brothers’ Meeting, food off the grill, and then the football game.  Congratulations to Paul Wrayno and Toastie for winning our first ever Homecoming Spades tournament!  There was a chocolate fountain social Saturday night and a small brunch on Sunday.

The chapter always loves to see alumni, whether at these larger events or just from day to day. The alumni who came here enjoyed themselves, and we had a great time hanging out with them. If you’d ever like to drop by, you’re more than welcome! Always feel free to contact our Alumni Correspondent, Lisa Gutermuth, by e-mail or phone (919 – 410 – 7748).

Psi U’s Guide to the Galaxy /2010/psi-us-guide-to-the-galaxy /2010/psi-us-guide-to-the-galaxy#comments Mon, 13 Sep 2010 00:13:15 +0000 brother /?p=1581 Psi U had its first party of the year on the 11th of September and it was a great success! With the theme “Psi U’s Guide to the Galaxy”, involving numerous references to the Hitchhiker’s Guide and space in general, there were numerous activities from an “Infinite Improbability Rave” to a lightsaber dueling room (Jedi vs. Sith). Plus there were muffins with star-shaped sprinkles at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, a displaced “Western Galaxy” one-eyed barman at the Bar at the Other End of the Universe…and a lot of new guests and partying brothers.

Psi Upsilon’s Out Door BBQ! /2010/psi-upsilons-out-door-bbq /2010/psi-upsilons-out-door-bbq#comments Fri, 09 Apr 2010 08:19:41 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1358 The weather is a flighty mistress. At one point it was cold and harsh, and the next it was incredibly warm and nice. Luckily for the brothers of Psi Upsilon, the weather was looking mighty nice when we decided to host an outdoor barbecue.

Psi Upsilon brothers gather for a wonderful day

The barbecue started at around high noon, when our illustrious chef Brandon Noia began to work on cooking some burger patties.

The Chef

All hail the Chef!

The brothers of Psi Upsilon then spent the day enjoying lots of delicious burgers, hot dogs, and chips & dip, in addition to socializing with each other on the bench.

Fun and delicious!

Fun and delicious!

In the end, it was an amazing barbecue due to the wonderful weather, food and brother interaction. Thanks to all who came, organized and enjoyed this event!

The American Tobacco Trail Cleanup /2010/the-american-tobacco-trail-cleanup /2010/the-american-tobacco-trail-cleanup#comments Tue, 26 Jan 2010 22:31:35 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1243 We pose for a grou-holy crap that's a lot of trash

We pose for a grou-holy crap that's a lot of trash

There are some us that would wallow in filth and garbage rather than clean up. Luckily, many members of the Psi Upsilon fraternity and their rushees are not like that! Rejoice Captain Planet, for we have served nature well with our awesome cleanup job of the American Tobacco Trail!

For those of you that don’t know, Thomas Kagarise, one of the original members of the Chi Delta of Psi Upsilon at Duke University, helped in founding the American Tobacco Trail, and thus this trail is quite important to our fraternity. Doing all we can to help clean it up should come naturally as one of the primary duties of the Psiu Upsilon fraternity here at Duke.

It was hell of fun. We hauled hundreds of pounds of trash! Take a gander at this pile of crap:

No, that car is not garbage. But man, that other stuff is!

No, that car is not garbage. But man, that other stuff is!

Rusty barrels, a green water heater, a fridge that looks like the one Harrison Ford hid in in the not so good fourth movie of the Indiana Jones franchise, a car transmission and a large TV antenna pole were some of the heaviest items that could be found in the large heaps of trash. Smaller items included recyclable waste, medical waste (IV bags & syringes) and a creepy looking rocking horse made either for midgets or tiny children. Check out the other pictures of the trash below:

Why is man such a dirty creature?

That's the fridge there on the left. Harrison Ford not included.

The dirty sins of our trashy past.

We thank all the brothers and rushees who were able to make it out there and clean up the American Tobacco trail. There was still a large amount of trash left to be cleaned up, as we could not get all of it in one work day. Hopefully we’ll be back next month to continue our grand efforts. Thanks all!

Brunch ‘n Beachball on East, Part Deux /2010/brunch-n-beachball-on-east-part-deux /2010/brunch-n-beachball-on-east-part-deux#comments Mon, 18 Jan 2010 17:03:17 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1205 Despite having to get up at the blindingly early hour of eleven o’clock, good times were had at the Marketplace.  A hearty thanks for all you freshmen who gallantly used your guest passes so we could mooch off of you to feed us.

Afterwards, as promised there was the GIANT beachball along with a GIANT frisbee and a parachute… which was also QUITE LARGE.  It was like someone, namely our Georgia Tech brother Austin, raided a Brobdingnagian toy store. The quad was a bit muddy and the beachball rapidly became wet and dirty, but we kept kicking and tackling and facebutting the ball anyway.  It’s funny how simply having a large, free-rolling spherical object can spark the imagination: some of the things that were tried include bowling with human bowling pins, recreating Atlas, and rolling someone around on top of the ball.  And then, just to add on to this field day of epic proportions, it started raining; slowly at first but culminating in a beautiful downpour.  We effectively proved that humans, or at least the brothers of Psi Upsilon and our dedicated rushees, are waterproof.  Amazing!

Trying out the parachute

Keep it in the air!

My pet beachball

The COLOSSAL beachball naturally drew a lot of attention.  Although there were only a few people who were manly enough to actually join, several passerbys showed their appreciation for our beachball, including at least one person who took a picture.  And we didn’t even crush any innocents!  Ultimately, one could call it a MASSIVE success.

Winter Break in South Florida /2009/winter-break-in-south-florida /2009/winter-break-in-south-florida#comments Mon, 28 Dec 2009 21:23:51 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1173

Gathered outside of the go-karts at Boomers in Boca Raton, Florida. From left to right: Lisa Gutermuth, Tina Del Carpio, Lindsay Resnick, Liz Scott, Charles Tao.

We’re always found together – even when school’s out. Actives local to South Florida Liz Scott, Lisa Gutermuth, and Tina Del Carpio got together for an afternoon of fun with Chi Delta alumn Charles Tao and Gamma Tau pledge Lindsay Resnick who were visiting relatives in South Florida. They met up for lunch and introductions at Moe’s Southwest Grill in Boca Raton. From there the group enjoyed the afternoon at Boomers of Boca. Boomers is a “family fun center” equipped with an arcade, mini-golf, a rock climbing wall, and go-karts. In lieu of House of the Dead, Charles showed off his sharp shooter skills playing Time Crisis III with everyone. Lindsay and Tina faced off at Guitar Hero while Lisa and Liz battled in Percussion Master. Everyone enjoyed racing one another on the go-karts while constantly being reminded “NO BUMPING!”.

Passing under the bridge, Lisa takes the lead with Charles following and Liz not too far behind.

Lindsay and Liz enjoy the prizes they got with their tickets. Lindsay won a jackpot of 544 tickets! Liz won the 4 ticket case playing Deal or No Deal.

All in all it was a great outing in the cool Florida weather bringing together different generations of Psi U’s as well as different chapters.

Holiday Party /2009/holiday-party /2009/holiday-party#comments Sat, 05 Dec 2009 21:12:38 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1164 Psi Upsilon celebrated the coming holidays on Thursday! Friday was the last day of classes, so we had to go out with some fun. We had a tree with lots of presents under it brought by Brothers and our friends, and enough cookies to make everybody jolly. Of course we also had the white elephant gift exchange!

After everyone put their presents under the tree…

The tree and goodies!

Lisa had everyone draw a number from a hat…

Draw a number!

And the general mayhem/happiness ensued! The exchange was great. Psi U is pretty awesome and quirky, and the gifts brought to the exchange reflected that.

Neat stuff!

It was our last event before finals this week. Good luck to everyone! Classes resume in mid-January, so look for an update around then. Happy Holidays!

A Thanksgiving to Remember /2009/a-thanksgiving-to-remember /2009/a-thanksgiving-to-remember#comments Mon, 30 Nov 2009 23:47:24 +0000 brother /wordpress/?p=1154 On Sunday, November 22nd, the brothers of Psi Upsilon invited family, friends, faculty, and staff to enjoy a Thanksgiving to get the holiday season kick-started a little early this year.  The brothers cooked (or cheated and bought) all of the delicious food, including turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, stir-fried rice, and endless pies and other desserts among other provisions.  Whether stuffing their faces, engaging in conversation, or playing foosball with Dean Gonzalez’s kids, the dinner was a fantastic treat before heading home to our families.  Thank you to everyone who was able to attend!
